CyberPatriot

  • Overview: Hosted by the Air & Space Forces Association, this is the world’s largest youth cyber defense competition. Teams act as newly hired IT professionals tasked with finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems while maintaining critical services.
  • Eligibility: Middle and high school students (grades 6-12).
  • Focus: Network security, system hardening (Windows and Linux), and networking quizzes.
  • Benefits: National recognition, scholarship money, and all-expenses-paid trips to the National Finals Competition for top teams.

picoCTF

  • Overview: Created by security experts at Carnegie Mellon University, picoCTF is a free, online “Capture the Flag” (CTF) game. It uses a series of challenges and a compelling storyline to teach students about cryptography, web exploitation, forensics, and reverse engineering.
  • Eligibility: Ages 13+ (middle school, high school, and college students worldwide).
  • Focus: Problem-solving, creative thinking, and a wide range of offensive and defensive technical skills.
  • Benefits: Global leaderboard prestige, prizes, and a direct path to internships and roles at top tech companies and government agencies. 

Other Notable Competitions

  • National Cyber League (NCL): While primarily targeting high school and college students, NCL offers individual and team challenges that mimic real-world job tasks and help build a “scouting report” for potential employers.
  • CYBER.ORG’s National Cyber Cup: This program offers free, Jeopardy-style CTF competitions for students in grades 4-12, providing engaging challenges on various cybersecurity topics.
  • US Cyber Challenge (USCC): USCC offers online Cyber Quests and summer camps aimed at identifying and developing America’s next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
